At Kallpa Travel, we believe that one of the best ways to preserve the magic of Peru is through responsible travel. As part of that commitment, we want to help you understand the new Machu Picchu entrance tickets and how they reflect the growing effort to protect this iconic site for future generations.
Why the Change?
Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, has seen an overwhelming number of visitors in recent years. To protect its delicate archaeological structures and natural environment, Peru’s Ministry of Culture has introduced updated tickets to Machu Picchu, effective from 2024. These new regulations aim to manage the flow of travelers more sustainably, while still allowing people from around the world to experience its beauty.
What You Need to Know About the New Tickets
The new ticketing system divides Machu Picchu into three main circuits, each with specific routes. When purchasing your entrance ticket, you must choose a specific route within a circuit:
Circuit 1 (Panoramic Route)
- Route 1-A: Machu Picchu Mountain Route – Includes a hike up Machu Picchu Mountain with panoramic views of the entire site.
- Route 1-B: Upper Terrace Route – Ideal for classic panoramic photos.
- Route 1-C: Sun Gate Route (Intipunku) – Available only during high season.
- Route 1-D: Inca Bridge Route – Available only during high season.
Circuit 2 (Classic Machu Picchu Route)
- Route 2-A: Designed Route – Offers a comprehensive visit through central and ceremonial areas.
- Route 2-B: Lower Terrace Route – A shorter route focusing on the lower urban zone.
Circuit 3 (Royalty Route)
- Route 3-A: Huayna Picchu Mountain Route – Includes a climb up Huayna Picchu with views and access to the Temple of the Moon.
- Route 3-B: Designed Route – Explores key areas in the lower sector.
- Route 3-C: Great Cavern Route – Available only during high season.
- Route 3-D: Huchuy Picchu Route – A shorter hike available only during high season.
Timed Entries and Limited Availability
Another important change is the implementation of timed entry slots. Visitors must choose a specific time to enter, and only a limited number of people are allowed in per time block. This not only helps control the number of visitors but also ensures a more peaceful and enjoyable experience for everyone.
As a trusted Peru travel agency, Kallpa Travel is here to help you navigate these changes smoothly. We recommend booking your Machu Picchu entrance tickets well in advance, especially if you plan to visit during the high season (May to September).
